Elmex oral healthcare products

Elmex dental floss is produced by GABA International. Based in Switzerland, GABA International, together with its subsidiaries is a major player in dental health care. It is also one of the oldest companies of its type in the world. GABA was founded in 1638 as Goldene Apotheke Basel (GABA) but it wasn’t till 200 years later when the company began to get noticed. In 1848 the company manufactured ‘wybert’ tablets (after Dr. Emanuel Wybert) as a way of combating a serious outbreak of influenza.

In 1906 the company developed its first plant outside of Switzerland at Alsace while in 1917 the company had developed so much it was forced to split operations into 2 separate companies. The major output of GABA products was pharmaceutical but this changed when in 1944 the company introduced their first oral health care commodities. This was Aronal toothpaste with Vitamin A.

The 1960s onwards saw massive expansion in dental health, helped by the development of organic amine fluoride and Elmex anti-caries toothpaste. The 1990s saw further development of the Elmex range of products including the Elmex sensitive brand. This development continues today with GABA manufacturing a range of different oral health care products, ranging from toothpaste to flossers.
